A residence permit in Greece

under the category of “financially independent persons” -

{οικονομικά ανεξάρτητα άτομα}

 - this kind of resident permit has been started in Greece since 2006.

       In accordance with the provisions of Article 20A of the Immigration Code of Greece (Law No. 4251/2014), financially independent persons (non EU citizens) are entitled to apply for this residence permit.This residence permit is issued in Greece in the migration service at the place of residence of the applicant and on the basis of a previously obtained visa D from the Consulate of Greece at the place of residence in his country.

     The main and most important condition for obtaining a D visa is the ability to prove by document that the applicant has a regular monthly income of at least 2,000 euros (or equivalent in national currency) or has at least 24,500 euros in the applicant's account in any bank.

       Income can be from any source (savings in the bank in any currency, wages, dividends, income from the rental of real estate, pension, etc.).

        If the applicant is desired to be accompanied by his family members, then the above amount of monthly income of 2.000 euros should be increased by 20% for the spouse and 15% for each minor child. Family members are the spouse and children until they are 18 years old. Children who have a residence permit of a family member of a financially independent person who have reached the age of 18 years go to an independent residence permit up to 24 years with the right to work in Greece.
        Holders of a residence permit of a financially independent person do not have access to the labor market in Greece. The initial registration of this residence permit is carried out for 2 years, with the subsequent right to renew it every time for the next 3 years (without re-obtaining a national visa). To update, you must provide evidence of financial independence (a certificate from any bank and any country) and medical insurance. The right to file a dossier for Greek citizenship in the category of this residence permit comes after 12 years. The procedure for obtaining a residence permit in the category of financially independent persons:

The obtaining of a residence permit of a financially independent entity consists of two stages.

1) an application to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Greece at the place of residence for a national visa. This visa is valid for 1 year with an unlimited number of entries (multi) - {we provide the applicant with a full list of documents and detailed instructions after signing the contract for the provision of legal services}.

2) after obtaining a national visa, and during the period of its validity, the applicant must enter Greece and apply to the Migration Department for a residence permit.The filing of a dossier for a residence permit can be made by proxy or in the presence of the applicant (and his family members). From the moment of acceptance of the application by the Migration Service of Greece for a residence permit, the applicant is issued a temporary certificate for a period of 1 year, which confirms the fact of delivery of documents and provides all the rights that are provided for in this category to the holder of a residence permit. Upon receipt of the completed residence permit, the aforementioned temporary certificate must be submitted back to the Migration Service. Since 2017, a residence permit of any category in Greece is issued only in the form of a plastic card.The process of applying for a residence permit begins only from the moment the applicants submit biometric data, which implies the personal presence of applicants for this procedure.A ready residence permit is obtained by proxy with the presentation of the original passport of the applicant and the delivery of a temporary certificate.The first residence permit in this category is issued for a period of 2 years and then for a period of 3 when it is updated.
